What was the last movie you've seen?

Post  Rich Fingerland on Fri Sep 30, 2011 12:58 am

A Clockwork Orange - can't believe Kubrick ever got this thing made. Crazy. McDowell's performance is Oscar worthy.

It does get slow towards the end of the second act, but the rest of the movie is extermely compelling and entertaining.

I have a great photo of myself and a bunch of friends dressed as characters from that movie. Surprised you've never seen it before.

I wouldnt call that movie a must see but it is sort of an iconic. I havent seen it in probably 20 years. Might be worth revisiting.

What is and isn't a must see varies depending on who you talk to. Some would say it absolutely is. My list is maddeningly long. I think there's over 40. But I've counted over 200 must or should sees that I've seen already.

And then there's the question of what I put on that list. Yeah, Psycho and The Birds go on, but do I put Rope or Frenzy on? So subjective. But I try to keep unnecessary stuff off. For example - one of my favorite flicks is The 13th Warrior, but it doesn't belong on the list - unfair or not.

And there are some movies I'm just not gonna get to. Sure, eventually I'll buckle down and spend 4 hours or whatever it is watching Lawrence of Arabia, but am I ever really gonna watch Gone with the Wind? Probably not.

Ive seen Gone with the Wind, its a movie to sit down with a girlfriend and watch. She'll likely admire your open mindedness in watching such a classic and maybe actually have sex with you. Or not.

Watching tonight:

- MacGyver: Lost treasure of Atlantis.
- Rapid Fire
- Gone in 60 seconds (nic cage)

I love MacGyver so it was a trip back in time seeing a movie I saw when it first aired on TV. Smile

I liked Gone in 60 Seconds. Good film although Jolie looks freaky in it.

MacGyver pwns all.

Anyway - Raging Bull. I wasn't too enamored with the storyline, which was essentially a chronicle of LaMotta beating the shit out of people, then being a paranoid piece of shit and yelling at / smacking around his wife - but De Niro's performance is great and Scorsese's direction of the boxing scenes is really something to see - at turns brutal and magical - almost mythical. It's a movie to watch for Scorsese's direction and De Niro's performance.

B+

I've now completed the required Scorsese watching - Taxi Driver, Raging Bull and Goodfellas. In addition to that I've seen his more recent stuff like Bringing Out the Dead, Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Departed and Shutter Island. I may well eventually watch Casino, Cape Fear, Mean Streets etc. - but I've done the required amount of work on Scorsese.

I'm currently watching South Park's homage to Heavy Metal, with the b-story of Cartman hiding cats from the DEA like Jews from Nazis. There is something nice about seeing that Cartman actually cares for Mr. Kitty.

Movie night last night.

The Ides of March - It’s good, kinda, but just felt very slight to me. Like half a movie. When you get to the last handful of shots you realize the movie is about to end and it’s like, really? That’s it?

The thing is the story is all about the principles of one guy, so you can have a three act structure in terms of his arc, but just not a lot happens otherwise.

Gosling is good, but not great. I’ve not seen Drive, but my friend said he’s MUCH better in that. Clooney just hangs around playing a less charismatic, stiffer version of himself. He gets one scene where he tries to be a good actor, but he still just seems like Clooney acting – not a character, not a person.

Clooney’s direction is very standard, very self-important. What jumped out at me was how poorly he worked with some of the musical cues. They were too big for what was happening and it just seemed weird.

What the movie says about politics couldn’t be clearer if they wrote it on a scroll at the bottom of the screen, but as a movie it just doesn’t seem like a worthwhile exercise. And if it racks up a bunch of nominations – it just means the Oscars are more broken than I thought. C+

WARRIOR - Now, that’s a movie. Very engaging, entertaining, and compelling. At times they throw a few too many things in there and it doesn’t always work, but it’s a good movie. Edgerton and Hardy are ones to watch. I’ve been saying that about Edgerton for a while, but now Hardy has convinced me as well. And I can’t wait to see what Gavin O’Connor comes up with next. B

BTW - Jeff and Knutty, you ought to get out to see Warrior before it's completely gone from theaters. This may well be your last week to do so.

Saw Blackthorn last night and it was really good. I love westerns. Good acting. Little slow at times and the dialogue was somewhat limited but very visual.

The Keep - the debut feature of Michael Mann. I'm still unsure as to whether I actually watched the movie or someone slipped LSD into my Baja Fresh. It's really something. A gothic horror film with STUNNING visuals, clearly the work of a master in the making, that is often unbelievably cheesy and crappy.

Mann had Tangerine Dream score the film and the results are often pure cheese. He would later use some of their songs in Manhunter to great effect - but here they often miss the mark by a wide margin. Like I said - it's a gothic horror film, but much of Dream's score sounds like it came out of a second rate fantasy film. There's a scene where two soldiers are going to seek treasure - running to what we know will be their deaths, and Dream does this triumphant track that would have been too cheesy for Krull. Combine that with Mann shooting it in epic slow-motion and it's just weird beyond words.

The story also has some unavoidably silly aspects, which weren't 100% Mann's fault (though he co-wrote the screenplay) - but at this point he wasn't up to the task of making them not stupid.

Still - there are some breathtaking shots in this thing. Jaw-dropping.

I absolutely recommend this to James, Jer and Knutty - it has to be seen to be believed.

Watched Fast Five on blu ray. I'll tell you what, that movie was SO much better at the theater. I saw it in surround on a 58" TV and I found myself just picking it apart. So many flaws I didnt notice when I saw it on the big screen.
